2K Games, owner of franchises like borderlands and NBA 2K, communicated to its users about the hacker attack it suffered in its support in the month of September. An investigation by an outside source took place, offering clarification to the company. As a result, the developer and publisher decided to reach out to people affected by the data breach.
According to 2K, the breach occurred on September 19. The criminal accessed the company’s support, where he was able to obtain information such as email addresses, names and more sensitive elements. On the 20th, the company tweeted about the event.
After further investigation, a new statement was sent via email on Thursday (6), which reads:
Upon further investigation, we have discovered that an unauthorized third party has accessed and copied some of the personal data we record about you when you contact us for support: your name when you contact us, email address, helpdesk ID number , gamertag and console details. There is no indication that any of your financial information or passwords held on our systems have been compromised.
We also discovered that the unauthorized party sent a communication to certain players containing a malicious link that was intended to provide a software update starting at 2K. Instead, the link contained malware that had the potential to compromise data stored on your device, including passwords.
The good news, if any in such a situation, is that credit card numbers or passwords were not stolen by the offender. Well, that could have been a lot worse than it was.
Be careful not to fall for the criminal’s lip service
Apparently, help desk attacks draw the attention of hackers because the administrative tools of these positions open many doors. From there, offenders can use weapons like phishing to acquire passwords, authentication codes, etc.
of course create secure passwords It is the first step to protect yourself, however, if the individual manages to steal your password from yourself or from a support page, for example, then not even the best of keywords will save you.
In this case, it is important to know what to do in case of personal data leakage. Knowing the types of scams helps you prepare for a hacker onslaught. In addition, paying attention to the movement of your account is essential.
Lastly, always be wary of third-party emails. Check the return address and try to find out if a company makes this type of contact with their customers. Do not open unknown links and never pass sensitive information such as passwords, credit card number and security code over the phone.
