After months of testing, the Microsoft started to release some news to the excel🇧🇷 This Monday (20), the company announced a function to include images in cells, with options to adjust the size of the attached media. The suite’s spreadsheet editor Microsoft 365 also gained suggestion of formulas on the web.
Let’s start with the option to attach imageswhich landed in software for Windows, Mac and web version.
What’s new is actually a function for cells. To use it, the user just needs to type “=IMAGE()” and specify the location of the media inside the parentheses.

How to use the IMAGE function?
In an example provided by Microsoft, the address of the file hosted on the web was included in cell B1. Alternative text, which describes what is in the media, has been added in area B2.
Therefore, the function was used as follows, calling information from other cells:
=IMAGE(B1,B2,0)The user can add other forms. For example, you can use the image link directly in the formula.
Too many combinations are possible. in a publication on the Office Insider websiteMicrosoft reported that the formula also provides the option to adjust the size of the image.
In the end, the complete formula is presented as follows:
=IMAGE("Endereço da imagem com HTTPS", "Texto alternativo da imagem", "Dimensão da imagem", "Altura da imagem", "Largura da imagem")The document also states that the IMAGE function supports the following file formats: BMP, JPG/JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, ICO and WEBP.
Images also need to be pulled from the web to be included in cells.
In addition to the computer, the novelty is available on the Android app for those who are part of the Office Insiders program.
Excel web gains formula suggestions and more
Microsoft implemented other software improvements in the December 2022 Update.
At web version, users now get formula suggestions when typing “=” in the cell. For example, if you’ve included several numbers in a column, Excel will make it easy to use functions like sum, average, and the like.
The novelty, however, is limited for now to those who use the platform in English.
There is also a kind of expansion of instant filling thanks to Formula by Example.
Here’s how it works: if you’re manually including repetitive data in a column, Excel may suggest filling an entire column with a formula. The mechanism will kick in if a pattern is identified by the software.
If you are working with more than one worksheet, Excel will also identify if an external link to a cloud workbook is broken. This will allow you to suggest a new location to fix the broken connection.
The web version also received improvements in the search within the spreadsheets.
Power Query gains shortcut in spreadsheet editor
Other improvements have been implemented in the desktop versions of Excel.
According to Microsoft, users can launch the Power Query editor directly from the keyboard with the following commands:
- Windows: Alt + F12;
- Mac: Option+F12.
Still on Power Query, the company is offering other experimental tools to Insiders participants.
Excel for Windows users will now be able to create nested data types. It is also possible to obtain information from dynamic arrays.
The news is still being implemented in the program. Therefore, if you haven’t received it yet, you will need to wait for it to be released to your computer or account.
