Something went unnoticed on Tuesday (18), when the Lenovo showed the prototype of the smartphone with a scrollable panel from Motorola. Without delving into the details, the Chinese brand also showed a notebook with a “rollable” screen — but not in the hands of an employee.
Notebooks with folding screens aren’t that new anymore. Lenovo itself already has the Thinkpad X1 Fold, while Asus has the Zenbook 17 Fold. Therefore, the former need to take the next technological step, introducing new device formats. And scrollable screen should be the next bet.
Scrollable screen and you: to scroll or not to scroll?
Collapsible and scrollable displays have a few things in common: provide greater mobility with the product and use in multi-tasking applications. But, in theory, a scrollable screen allows the development of lighter products, beating the foldables in the convenience of carrying your notebook or smartphone.
see the Galaxy Z Fold 4: It can be compact when it’s “closed”, but it’s quite thick in the pocket. The same is true when we talk about the Thinkpad X1 Fold. The scrollable laptop shown in the video Lenovo seems to maintain the “normal” size of a notebook.
In the end, what will even matter to roll (pardon) a consumer interest with the product is its functionality. Taking for example a designer, a scrollable canvas, zooming vertically, is useful for the production of a poster or page layout — the same goes for a journalist writing a longer text.
The demos of scrollable displays from Lenovo it’s very opportuneof course — were carried out during the Lenovo Tech World, an event in which the company needs to please investors and the public. However, she is not the only one to believe in technology.
Manufacturers bet on new screen format
THE Samsung is well consolidated with its folding, the Galaxy Z Fold caters to those who need a tablet and a smartphone, while the Z Flip, in addition to being nostalgic, pleases those looking for a compact cell phone. However, it and other companies, including its countrywoman LG and the Chinese Oppo, develop their devices with scrollable screens.
Still on Samsung, this year it released a video showing two smartphone concepts with a scrollable screen (not to mention the new foldable formats).
In 2021, LG showed at CES the LG Rollable. The manufacturer promised that it would arrive in the same year, but ended up closing its smartphone division. However, this does not mean that the company, a company with a strong presence in the TV and screen market, has given up on the idea.
The Chinese Oppo presented the smartphone with a scrollable screen X 2021, scheduled for launch next year. Some technology influencers had access to the prototype of the device – which even appears to be the model most likely to debut on the market.
