THE Motorola announced this Tuesday (18), at the event Lenovo Tech World 2022, a smartphone concept with a rollable screen. Although the idea is not new, the announcement shows that another manufacturer is testing (or “playing” with) the format. LG, Oppo and Samsung have also presented this screen concept for cell phones.
In 2019, the Motorola launched the Moto Razr, a foldable smartphone, making it one of the first manufacturers to launch such a cell phone. But don’t expect to see the rollable phone coming anytime soon — if it ever comes out.
The prototype presented by Luca Rossi, executive of Lenovouses an OLED panel and measures 6.5 inches when fully extended — the reduced size is not specified, but the Motorola announced that it is around 5 inches. Screen expansion is activated via a button on the side.
In the video, the smartphone’s wallpaper moves as the screen increases, a pleasant experience for the concept, but the best comes next. Rossi shows that the display is automatically expanded when the user rotates the phone to watch some video.
Let’s face it, a rollable screen is not enough to be “cool” or technological: it needs to add some utility to the smartphone, as well as a Galaxy Z Fold open delivers more convenience for multitasking — leaving the cell phone compact for transport is good, but it’s not everything.
The video shows that the prototype was not made in CGI, it is possible to see the battery and cell signal icon. However, don’t expect it to hit the market anytime soon. First, the manufacturers want to popularize foldable smartphones (the price range is still an issue), after that happens it will be time to test new types of displays: be it rollable, tri-fold or screen continuing on the back.
