2022 was intense for the cell phone market, but some manufacturers had a more restrained movement. It is the case of Motorola, which launched fewer cell phones in recent months than in previous years, interrupting the portfolio expansion cycle. THE samsung also featured a lower amount of models compared to 2021.
Even so, the period was one of great revelations. On Motorola’s side, the company launched the Edge 30 Ultra, the first on the market with a 200-megapixel camera. Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Note’s spiritual successor: the Galaxy S22 Ultra, keeping the S Pen legacy alive.

This is what a survey carried out by the Technoblog with the mobile base of the GSMArena considering global premieres, including re-releases. For the analysis, we chose the top three manufacturers in Latin America, such as Samsung and Motorola.
Xiaomi, however, assumed a different behavior: the company launched more cell phones than previous years in 2022.
Companies, it should be noted, ranked first in Latin America in the third quarter of 2022according to Counterpoint Research.
Samsung revealed fewer phones in 2022
Let’s start with Samsung, leader in Latin America.
The manufacturer presented 27 models from January to December 2022. The amount is 32.5% less than the previous year’s result: 40 releases.
Before, Samsung maintained a pace of growth since 2017, when it unveiled 25 cell phones. The cycle, however, ended in 2020, period with 45 launches.
But let’s focus on 2022.

Year kicked off with the debut of the Galaxy S21 FE
The year got off to a busy start with the Delayed debut of the Galaxy S21 FE. Introduced in the early days of 2022, the cell phone came into the world as a more affordable alternative to the Galaxy S21 line models.
However, it didn’t take long and Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S22 family. The star of the trio was awarded to Galaxy S22 Ultrawhich revived the glory days of the Galaxy Note line.
All this, of course, caters to a more demanding audience. With that in mind, in March, Samsung announced the new Galaxy A33 and A53 to meet those who want to save money but don’t want to give up a good cell phone.
In the intermediate line, there was also the debut of Galaxy A73 It’s from M53.
The foldables were also renewed. Keeping the same flip design, the South Korean brand introduced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 without many differences compared to the previous generation. The same happened with the new Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Samsung is leader in Latin America
All this movement gave the brand a prominent position: even with the market decline, Samsung was one of the only manufacturers to grow in Latin America in the third quarter.
“Samsung has remained the clear leader in the region and in all individual countries,” said Andres Silva, research analyst at Counterpoint Research, in December.
And no less. In the third quarter, four out of ten cell phones in the region were manufactured by Samsung.
In the same period last year, the company had 36% of the Latin American market.

Motorola reduces the pace of releases
Motorola has undergone a change in behavior. As highlighted by Technoblog in the pastthe company launched few models until 2018.
However, from the second half of 2019 onwards, the company increasingly diversified its portfolio. No wonder, after the 13 launches of 2017, the company revealed 38 models in 2021.
The manufacturer, however, stepped on the brakes in 2022: in all, 29 cell phones were revealed, a reduction of 27.5% in the annual comparison.
Finally, a true flagship
The Edge line gained major reinforcements.
In addition to being the first to bring a cell phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (after all, the Edge 30 Pro and the Moto X30 from China), the company stood out with the launch of Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.
The cell phone is one of the biggest launches of the brand in recent times. Let’s start with the 200 megapixel camera that, during my brief reviewsurprised by the richness of detail and the well-lit photos in dark environments.
The smartphone also added a cutting-edge technical sheet, led by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Finally, Motorola promised three years of updates to the smartphone.
This wasn’t the only big release of the year. The brand also revealed the Motorola Edge 30 Neowith Pantone colors, and the foldable Motorola Razr 2022.

The Moto G line was also present
Despite the focus on the Edge line, the company introduced more mid-range cell phones this year.
It is the case of Moto G22which landed in Brazil in March with Android 12. Moto G42, Moto G52, Moto G62 it’s the Moto G82 hit the shelves soon after.
Motorola also unveiled the Moto E32s and other models from the entry line in Brazil.
Motorola is the second largest in Latin America
Behind Samsung, Motorola has a prominent position in the Latin American market.
Despite the drop in the third quarter of 2022, two out of ten cell phones on the block are manufactured by Motorola. At the time, Counterpoint Research even explained that the retraction was caused by the lack of basic models.
“The performance of the brand was particularly affected in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico”, said the Counterpoint Research note issued on the last day 12. “The recently launched Edge 30 flagship series also failed to please consumers.”
Still, Motorola gave Lenovo a profit for the 10th consecutive time in Q2 2022. In the report, the company even spoke of “hypergrowth” in strategic markets, such as Latin America.
