High-performance graphics cards need sophisticated components. THE samsung you are doing your part. This Tuesday (29), the company announced the memories GDDR6W🇧🇷 With twice the density and performance compared to GDDR6 memories, the novelty promises to make powerful GPUs even faster.
Of course, memory alone does not make the GPU increase its graphics processing capacity. On the other hand, an advanced memory technology optimizes the data stream handled by the graphics card.
In GDDR6W memories, the most notable advance appears in terms of density. Samsung managed to make such a chip have a capacity of up to 32 Gb (gigabits). In GDDR6 memories, the maximum capacity is 16 Gb per chip.
For this, Samsung applied a construction technology called Fan-Out Wafer-Level Packaging (FOWLP). It makes the chip have two layers of memory. Even with stacking, the module thickness did not increase. In fact, the height of the chip has been reduced by 36%, going from 1.1 mm to 0.7 mm.

According to the company, FOWLP technology also improves heat dissipation. This means that the double layer of memory does not make the chip overheat.
Doubling the chip density leads to two advantages. The first is to keep a certain amount of graphics memory, but reduce the number of chips needed to do so.
THE pc gamer sets a good example. The sign Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 it has 24 GB of GDDR6X memory divided into 12 chips, but it could have the same amount with only six GDDR6W chips.
The second advantage is doubling the amount of memory while maintaining the current number of chips. Have you thought about an RTX 4090 with 48 GB of memory?
Twice the performance
The increased density is a big step forward, but the new type of memory also puts a premium on performance. A GDDR6W chip makes the bandwidth jump from 24 to 48 Gb/s (gigabits per second) when communicating with the memory controller. This is an effect of doubling the amount of pins on each unit.
At the system level, all-memory bandwidth can reach 1.4 TB/s (terabytes per second) thanks to a 512-bit interface and a baud rate of 22 Gb/s per pin.

GDDR6W memories: when?
The announcement made by Samsung serves to present the new standard. So far, there is no forecast for the launch of video cards based on GDDR6W memories.
If it were to bet, I would bet on some Nvidia announcement for 2023. Currently, the company adopts GDDR6X memories, which are produced by Micron, as they are faster in some parameters compared to GDDR6 memories.
At the technology’s debut, we may not see an RTX 4000 GPU with GDDR6W memories, but Nvidia graphics cards designed for specific activities, such as virtual reality or artificial intelligence. This is because, in these applications, data volumes are usually gigantic.
