Without any major announcements or celebrations, Amazon began drone deliveries in two US cities: Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas. The company confirmed in June 2022 that it would start the project called Amazon Prime Air. However, it was only six months later that the plans really got off the ground.
To see the project come to life, Jeff Bezos’ company has been working closely with US Federal Aviation Administration officials. In August 2020, she received authorization to start deliveriesbut it is only now that it is actually carrying out the first tests with the public.
In addition, it was necessary to talk to the officials of the two cities in order to obtain permission to start work. Natalie Banke, a spokeswoman for the company, commented on the brand’s goals:
Our goal is to safely introduce our drones to the skies. We are starting in these communities and will gradually expand deliveries to more customers over time.
There are about 4,000 inhabitants in Lockeford, according to the DataUSA. In College Station, the number of residents is just over 120,000, according to data from the american census.
The lower number of residents should be a point that facilitates the first initiatives on the part of Amazon. It says it will notify customers of Prime Air availability in their areas.
Once a purchase is made, the drone will bring the package to the user and then descend low enough to drop the product in the person’s backyard. Finally, the machine will fly back to the delivery center.
Walmart now offers drone delivery in Texas
While Amazon was taking its time to put its drones in the skies, Walmart was already working and offering the alternative to its customers. Just before the holidays, the supermarket chain announced that it made the service available to 11 stores in the Dallas, Texas area.
Costing $3.99 per delivery, the network option is called DroneUp. It offers the shipment of more than 10,000 products, which include everything from fragile items such as eggs to even games and accessories.
The brand’s objective is to expand the activity to 5 more American states, which would cover approximately 4 million homes.
It is worth mentioning that there is still no confirmation about tests of this type in Brazil by Amazon.
